Dental Implants replace your missing teeth

Dental implant surgery is a procedure that replaces tooth roots with metal, screwlike posts and replaces damaged or missing teeth with artificial teeth that look and function much like real ones.

What is a Dental Implant?

Dental implants look and feel like natural teeth and can last a lifetime with correct maintenance.

Dental Implants are the new standard of care for tooth replacement. Dental Implants are made with titanium and are highly biocompatible which allows the implant to bond with healthy bone. This is called osseointegration and is achieved in 95-98% of cases.

This process of osseointegration takes about 3 months at which time they are ready to be used to provide permanent support for dental crowns, bridges and dentures.

Why should you replace missing teeth?

Our Reasoning

The rationale for replacing missing teeth depends on which tooth has been lost and its importance from a functional perspective. Back teeth are important from a functional perspective, whilst front teeth have more aesthetic considerations.

Loss of your back teeth can lead to:
  • Decrease in chewing ability
  • Increase pressure on the neighbouring teeth which can precipitate further issues with them especially in people who have wear on their teeth or whose teeth have been compromised by the placement of large restorations previously
  • Migration of neighbouring teeth. This is especially the case with the loss of the lower first molar which acts like a pillar in the mouth. When it is lost the teeth around it migrate especially the upper first molar which drops down into void. This creates poor contact points with the teeth in front and behind, over time this predisposes these teeth to gum disease and decay
  • The second molar on the bottom drops into this space also. This creates a destructive contact on its opposing tooth. If the opposing tooth has been compromised by a large restoration, this can lead to its fracture
  • Loss of the bone occurs overtime due to lack of stimulation from chewing forces. We can place implants where teeth have been missing for decades but it can involve the need for bone and soft tissue grafting to allow for the safe placement of the implant
  • Loss of back teeth and the bone can also cause a decrease in lower facial height which can result in a more aged look.
Loss of your front teeth can lead to:
  • Unattractive smile
  • Changes in lip support causing a more aged look
  • Decrease in chewing ability.

Implants Couple

Advantages of Implants

  • A dental implant is a stand alone fixed tooth replacement which is independent of the teeth either side,
  • No grinding down of otherwise heathy neighbouring teeth which increases the risk of future tooth failure,
  • Maintains the bone,
  • Maintains tooth and mouth functionality,
  • With immediate implants, we can take a tooth and replace it all on the same day. Walk in with a tooth and walk out with an implant supported temporary prosthesis.
What Are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are titanium roots that are implanted into your jawbone beneath your gums. Once in place, they provide a solid foundation to have a crown placed on the implant.

The replacement teeth will be made to match your natural teeth which will give your implants the appearance that they are your teeth, it would be very hard for anyone to ever notice your dental implants.

However, dental implants aren’t the right option for everyone.

Are Implants Right For Me?

The best answer to whether you are a suitable candidate for a dental implant can be determined after an initial consultation with your dentist. During the initial consultation, your dentist will take x-rays of the specific area of your mouth that requires the implant to determine if the bone in the region is strong enough to support the implant and if there is enough room to place it.

Your dentist will also review your medical history during the initial consultation to ensure that you are physically capable of handling the surgical procedure and are not allergic to any medications.
After the initial consultation, if you are a suitable candidate for a dental implant, your dentist will discuss the cost and schedule a surgery date with you.

Frequently Asked Questions

Our patients ask lots of questions. We’re glad you do as it means we can make your visit to the dentist a pleasant an enjoyable time. Here are some of the questions we frequently get asked:

How do I find the best dentist to visit?

With so many dentists to choose from, how do you know you’re choosing the right one? Just make sure your dentist is good at the following:

  • Actively listens to you
  • Educates you on treatments and oral health
  • Respects your time and resources
  • Keeps a tidy practice
  • Doesn’t up-sell to you
  • Gets to know you
  • Follows-up with you
  • Values you as a patient

Ultimately, the right dentist for you always gives the care that you and your family deserve.

Why is a dental health checkup so important?

Dental health check-ups are a vital part of your overall oral health regime. If you wish to maintain happy and healthy teeth and gums you should aim to book an examination, check-up and clean at least every 6 months.

During your check-up and clean, your dental professional will check your overall oral health for any trouble areas, and will remove any plague and tartar build-ups that you are unable to remove with normal brushing and flossing.

Is dental hygiene important to my overall health?

Your oral health is actually a window to your overall health, and problems in your mouth can affect the rest of your body. Poor oral health may contribute to a number of conditions, including heart disease, pneumonia, diabetes and endocarditis.

This makes it important to practice good oral health techniques every day. You should brush your teeth at least twice a day; floss daily; limit your sugar intake; replace your toothbrush every three months; and schedule regular dental check-ups and professional cleans.

What is the average cost of teeth cleaning?
The cost of a professional check-up and clean at the dentist varies from practice to practice, but according to the website Choice who conducted a survey in Australia in 2017 on How much it costs to see a dentist, the price varied from $150 through to $305.

Pricing does depend on a variety of factors, including location, overheads and variances in the methods used (not all fillings are the same). But something you should always look into before booking a check-up and clean is what is actually included in your dental check-up.

If you book your regular check-ups at Contemporary Smiles, you will receive the following treatments:

  • a comprehensive oral exam
  • a check-up and clean (existing patients)
  • X-rays (if we don’t already have them on file).

Note: New patients at Contemporary Smiles will need to book in for a comprehensive initial examination with a dentist before a check-up and clean can be booked. This ensures we can provide you with the best treatment, and can identify any issues before they become a problem.

This would cost a total of $255.00 (although would be a much less if you have health insurance that covers dental treatments).

Price is obviously a factor, but is not the only important thing to look at when choosing a dentist for your next exam, check-up and clean.
