An attractive smile depends on an intact, healthy and functional dentition, their associated structures in and around the oral cavity and your overall wellbeing. At Contemporary Smiles we focus on all these aspects of your smile and not just a single tooth here and there. There are numerous factors that may affect the teeth, the supporting gums and bone, the tongue, the lips and the temporo-mandibular joint (TMJ). Such factors may include: neglect by the patient such as poor oral hygiene resulting in loss of teeth, deleterious habits of the patient such as bruxism (tooth grinding), age related changes such as wearing of the teeth and darkening of their shade, closure of the bite and arthritic changes in the TMJ, inheritance such as crowding of the teeth or a gummy smile and, last but not least, poor quality dental treatment that fails to recognize these problems and correct them when appropriate.
A common feature we find quite often is that patients have no idea of the extent of their problem. They have learned to live with and accept, for example, numerous missing teeth. It is our job, at Contemporary Smiles, to recognize all problems affecting your smile and that missing teeth, to take this example, are causing you considerable harm, because you are overloading your remaining teeth and wearing them out prematurely, you are shifting your chewing pattern and causing arthritis in your jaw joints as well as headaches, you get food stuck between your teeth because the teeth have moved and opened up the contacts between them, this in turn leading to gum disease and decay between these teeth and the loss of more teeth. As a result, you have bad breath, again because of food packing between your teeth, you are not able to chew your food properly resulting in lack of enjoyment of your meals as well as problems with your digestion and such things as constipation and diarrhoea. Last but not least, your speech, appearance, self esteem, and self confidence may be affected leading to problems with relationships or securing the job you have always wanted.

At Contemporary Smiles we provide a comprehensive evaluation of your existing smile and all factors that may have affected it by asking specific questions and listening to you to find out about the history that may have contributed to or caused the problem. We also conduct a careful examination of both intra and extraoral tissues and their functionality. We may take X-rays of your teeth and jaws, photographs of your face and smile and obtain impressions of your teeth to make study models. We may also conduct other, more specialized tests, such as caries susceptibility, salivary and dietary analysis. Only after careful consideration of all findings do we make a diagnosis and formulate a comprehensive treatment plan.
Contemporary Smiles focuses on your overall smile and not just on individual teeth. Our treatment plans reflect this as we always aim to provide you with a comprehensive plan to correct all possible factors that may have affected and/or are affecting your smile. Sometimes the cost of your treatment may seem quite expensive, but years of deterioration may warrant a complex and often multidisciplinary approach to correct the damage. As an example, if you have presented with numerous missing teeth and have worn down the remaining ones as a result and suffer from arthritis in your jaw joints due to overclosure of your bite, your treatment will require replacement of your missing teeth and restoration of your remaining ones to open up your bite and re-establish a healthy and more youthful smile. To accomplish this, you may need root canal therapy in a number of teeth, multiple crowns, bridges and implants and also medication and physiotherapy for your arthritis. You may even decide to have your teeth professionally lightened at some stage. We recognize that it may be possible to treat the same problem using a number of different approaches and we will present these to you at the same time.
No matter how complex your problem may be,
you can trust our team at Contemporary Smiles
to give you back the smile that you once had
or to create a new one that will be beautiful
as well as functional.
Your new smile is within your reach.
