SEDATION

Many people avoid going to the dentist because of fear and, as a result, both their dental and general health may suffer. At Contemporary Smiles we recognize this and offer a means to our patients for managing this fear which may include counselling, oral sedation before treatment, inhalational or intravenous sedation during treatment, or a general anaesthetic. At the initial consultation we decide together on the best option for you, depending on the type of treatment required and the level of your anxiety.

Verbal and Oral Sedation

We may spend some time with you explaining what your treatment involves. This should help to calm your fears.

We may prescribe an oral sedative for you to take before treatment. This will greatly reduce pre-appointment 'butterflies' and make treatment more comfortable. Additional sedation may be given at the time of your dental treatment to supplement the oral sedation.

Penthrox sedation

Penthrox Sedation

Penthrox is a revolutionary inhaled pain relief product which will provide you with immediate pain and anxiety relief. Penthrox is the combination of an inhaler device and a pharmaceutical agent that has been used in Australia for over 30 years by healthcare professionals for the provision of immediate pain relief. Penthrox will provide you with strong pain relief while at the same time helping you feel more comfortable. And you are in control of the level of your relief, simply by inhaling Penthrox through the Penthrox Inhaler.

General Anaesthetic

A general anaesthetic may be recommended in certain cases. A general anaesthetic causes loss of consciousness during which your vital signs are monitored closely by an anaesthetist. You are totally unaware of treatment and will not feel any pain. Recovery normally takes longer than from intravenous sedation.

General anaesthesia may be recommended for children who are extremely frightened, anxious or uncooperative. A general anaesthetic allows your dentist to work longer and complete more treatment on your child. This reduces the number of visits and your child is more likely to accept regular dental care following the treatment under general anaesthesia.

If your treatment and your needs warrant a general anaesthetic, this is normally carried out at the Wollongong Day Surgery.

In summary, whatever your needs maybe in terms of anxiety control, you can be sure that our professional team at Contemporary Smiles is there to look after you to make your visit with us as pleasant an experience as possible.
